Katherine Grier, Librarian at York Avenue Preschool

When Katherine Grier volunteered to head up the York Avenue Preschool Parent’s Association Library Committee for the 2011-2012 school year, she expected to help the librarian shelve books. She didn’t expect to become the official preschool librarian by December. But when the librarian resigned in the Fall of 2011, that’s what happened. A self-described “total bibliophile” who loves watching children get excited about bringing books home to share with their families, the new position suits her well. Trained as a lawyer, Katherine always thought she’d also like to own a bookstore. Working in the library, she says, feels close to achieving that dream.

Katherine has also volunteered at HousingWorks Bookstore for seven years and is proud to support its mission to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS.

Between her work in the library, practicing law part-time, and volunteering—not to mention being 4 ½-year-old Ruth’s mother—Katherine doesn’t have much time to spare these days. When she does find some, this “Martha Stewart-wannabe” enjoys scrapbooking, working on crossword puzzles, and listening to music.

She holds a B.A. in American Studies from Mount Holyoke College and a JD from Suffolk University Law School.
