Over the summer, Gymtime’s music master, Stuart Klinger (also known as Mr. Stuey) launched Bandwriting Fundamentals, a professional songwriting camp offering students a comprehensive experience of writing and producing music in New York City. The first session was held this past July, and with one recorded song already playing on the radio, we would say it was a huge success!

9 Kids.
3 Interns.
2 Weeks.
5 Recorded Songs.

For two weeks, nine children ranging in ages from 10-15 years old learned the in’s and out’s of recording their own music. Students spent the majority of the time at Ultra Sound Studios in Midtown listening to guest speakers and creating music together. From there, the group moved to Shelter Island Sound and spent two days recording a total of five songs. The session culminated with the Bandwriting Fundamentals Showcase performance at the East Village’s Sidewalk Cafe.

It was especially impressive to see the respect that all the kids showed each other. As much as we had lessons in the art and craft of songwriting and recording, we all learned a great lesson in cooperation. The pride and self-esteem that the kids showed was inspiring! We are looking forward to a 10-week program that will meet on Saturdays, hopefully beginning in October!
