Earlier this fall, Krista Jasper reached out to Gymtime in need of a space to practice for her off-broadway show, “Breaking (in) the Body,” a story of her journey to train for the 2008 Olympics in gymnastics. She started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the production, which debuts this Thursday, November 7 at  TADA! Youth Theater and will run until December 3, 2013. Tickets can be purchased here. Learn more about Krista and her upcoming production “Breaking (in) the Body.”

I’ve been an artist all my life, drawing, dancing, writing and performing since I was a little girl. At age 12 I was training for the 2008 Olympics in gymnastics where I traveled the world competing for my country and earning myself a full-athletic scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduating with a double BA in Dramatic Art and Communications in 2012, I moved to NYC to pursue my acting career. I am most proud of my own piece of work that I wrote and will be performing in called, “Breaking (in) the Body,” debuting off-Broadway this fall!

Breaking (in) the Body, is a one-woman show based on the true events of my life training for the 2008 Olympics – a coming of age story of a young gymnast who has a dream and how this dream leads her through failure, opportunity, and ultimately, ownership of her body.

While telling these stories, I perform gymnastics routines on each event, which correlate to a particular chapter in my journey. My quest to win the 2008 Olympics explores the relationship of a gymnast with her body, mind, and soul as gymnastics “makes and breaks” my body. The performance opens with the excitement and naivety of a child’s dream that progressively transforms into a life of sacrifice, hope, failure, and most importantly, opportunity.

I want to thank Gymtime for allowing me to rehearse for my show at their gym! It has been a wonderful experience training with such a welcoming staff as well as an amazing atmosphere in the gym. So thankful for their partnership and I look forward to the team coming to see the show!
