The PEP Plus virtual theme of the week is RAINBOWS 🌈 – so we’re sharing a S.T.E.A.M. activity that’s easy and fun to do at home.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • A plate or bowl (preferably something that is slightly sloped in towards the middle)
  • Warm Water
  • Skittles or M&Ms

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  1. Line the Skittles on a plate along the edge.
  2. Add warm water to the middle of the plate.
  3. Watch the rainbow appear to the middle!

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT:

As the warm water melts the sweets, beautiful colors emerge and make a stunning rainbow. The food coloring and sugar on the outside of the Skittles dissolves in water and then diffuses through the water. You’ll notice they won’t mix, creating beautiful lines of color! Try other variations, use a bigger plate or try making patterns with the different colors.
