Spring break is here! If your kids are anything like ours they start their breaks off excited, ready to run, play and party all day everyday. But, after a couple days, the excitement wears off and we start hearing the two worst words in a child’s vocabulary…“I’m BORED”.

We are here to help! We have compiled a list of the best events in the city over the next week to keep you and your family busy and sane during this not-so-sunny spring break!

Gymtime’s Spring Break In The City 2013 list:

Saturday: Museum Day

The Big Apple is one of the world’s best locations for top-notch museums, why not share the world of art and artifacts with you little ones? The Museum of Modern Art offers lots of great activities for kids and families. Four-year-olds can explore color, shapes and lines during the Family Gallery Talks at 10am this Saturday. Four-to six- year-olds can enjoy a special family workshop using pastels and paper at 10:30am and 2pm. The MOMA is also showing a free feature of Babe at 12pm! Tickets are on a first come first served basis so get there early. MOMA and numerous other museums in the city will be offering wonderful child-friendly activities all week!

Sunday: Celebrate Passover

Passover begins on the 25th, which is why today is the perfect day to take your family to see “Young Moses” by the Poppy Seed Players. This hilarious play re-tells the story of Moses and Passover in a very child-friendly manner, appealing to observers and non-observers alike.  Tickets are only $20 and the show begins at 11am!

Monday: Pajama Day

Everyone needs a day in their pj’s all day, especially a Monday! Spend the day inside with your family. Don’t change clothes, don’t leave the house, don’t even brush your hair! It is the perfect day to sleep late, watch your favorite Disney movies, play games and lounge.

Tuesday: Park Day

Did you know that this week is Kid’s Week for most NYC area parks? Check out local daily events here, or just head over to Central Park and enjoy one of their many playgrounds!

Wednesday: Theater Day

Today is the day to put on your fancy pants, bathe the kids and go out for a night on the town. I’m talking Broadway! There are so many fantastic family-friendly shows available right now. Cinderella is one of our favorite shows, but there are many more! Newsies is one of the newer shows, great for boys and full of incredible dancing. Mary Poppins is a magical show with a phenomenal set and unforgettable songs. Of course, there is the classic and always-popular Lion King. If none of these suit your fancy then you can check out Annie, Spider Man, Peter and the Star Catcher, Wicked, or Stomp!

Thursday: Dinner and a Movie

Turn this classic date night into a traditional family night! We love to hit up Big Daddy’s for dinner (I’ve always been a fan of breakfast for dinner). Next, we would have Emack and Bolio’s ice cream for dessert, and then it’s off to the movies. Right now I can’t decide of Oz The Great and Powerful or The Croods will be a better family flick…

Friday: Staycation

You may not be hopping on a plane to somewhere exotic this Spring Break, but who says you can’t have your own vacation right here in New York?! There are many easy trips out of the city that everyone can enjoy and even travel to by train. Your family can check out Bear Mountain State Park and hike, have a picnic, visit the museum and zoo and get a full day of adventure. If the great outdoors isn’t your thing then take a trip to Six Flags in New Jersey. Get your thrills on the rides, take your photos with Bugs Bunny and enjoy a hotdog and nachos.

Saturday: Grand Central Station

Virtually every child I know is fascinated with trains. They are not yet jaded New Yorkers who turn their nose up to the smells and the crowded cars. Before they lose their appreciation of trains, it might be a good idea to take them to Grand Central Station. There is much more to do then just watch the trains come in and of the station. It is currently the station’s Centennial celebration and you can find Art exhibits, events and special souvenirs all over the terminal. From March 25-31 artist Nick Cave will transform Vanderbilt Hall with a herd of thirty colorful life-size “horses”. This live art performance will be pulled off twice daily with the help of The Ailey School.

Sunday: Celebrate Easter

New York City has an annual Easter parade and Easter bonnet festival that is absolutely free! It starts on 5th Avenue and 44th St. at 10am; extreme and creative bonnets are encouraged! Spend the morning creating your own bonnets, watch the parade, and then join one of the numerous Easter egg hunts around the city!
