A Christmas Carol is about as classic as Christmas stories get. We all know how it goes –  The plot. The characters. The Dickens’ setting – yet we still enjoy hearing the tale year-after-year. And there is certainly nothing like seeing the story live.

Literally Alive is a New York City Children’s theatre that encourages reading by bringing books to life through art, dance, music and puppetry. A Christmas Carol  is running five times a week, until December 30th.

Upon entering, carolers greet guests on the sidewalk with cheery songs as they line-up to get their tickets. The theatre itself is quaint and the garland and twinkling lights add a festive touch to the holiday air.

The play begins as two very witty actors welcome the audience and gently remind everyone of proper theatre etiquette: no food, no drinks but yes to pictures posted to Facebook! It’s obvious from the start that children and adults alike are in for a good time.

The play, adapted by Literally Alive from the original book, follows Ebenezer Scrooge as he is visited by three Christmas ghosts.

A Christmas Carol

All of the music and sound effects are played by a very talented trio of musicians. The sets and costumes, while simple, are perfect for this little production. With the running time at just one hour, it makes for the perfect afternoon activity for families.

Children will love the silly jokes, colorful characters, recognizable carols and even the young actors. Adults will love the retelling of this childhood classic. Even Scrooge himself would have a hard time saying, “Bah-humbug!” to this show.

The show was wonderful and really puts you in the holiday spirit especially as it ends with the entire cast lining the aisles as you leave to wish you a “Merry Christmas” and “God bless us, every one!”

If you are interested in seeing A Christmas Carol you can buy tickets here. It is playing at Players Theatre at 115 MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village.
