Block play is such an important aspect of our preschool classroom. It fosters a child’s math, science, language and creativity skills.  A child can compare and contrast the attributes of each piece.  They also can classify by size, shape and color.  Children can comment on how many sides are on the block. Block play is also beneficial for a child to become familiar with balance, weight and spatial awareness.  As children play through blocks, their language skills are enhanced. One can ask open-ended questions to the children which will inspire them to have new ideas and use adjectives. In addition, block building adds to a child’s social development because children need to work together and converse with each other on what to build. They also learn an important lesson, “if something falls, you just build it up again!”
