Children love learning about new animals, especially those which are not indigenous to New York City. Last week at Early Learning Foundations Preschool, we learned about kangaroos! We discussed how kangaroos are marsupials and a main characteristic of marsupials is that they carry their young in their pouches. To help us remember this fact, we made our own kangaroo pouches. This craft is perfect for 3 -4 -year olds.

Make It Monday Kangaroo Pouch

Once the students were wearing their pouches, we learned that kangaroos have strong legs so they hopped all around the room and looked for a joey to put inside. They also learned that kangaroos use their tails to steer their direction and that their ears can move in all different directions. The children had a blast pretending to be kangaroos! Most of them wore their pouches home!

Materials:

  • Brown Kraft Paper
  • Scissors
  • Hole Punch
  • Stretchy String
  • Crayons

What You Do:
Use scissors to cut a half circle out of your paper. Have your child decorate their pouch with crayons to make it unique and special to them. Then, punch holes in the top corners of the pouch. Measure your little kangaroo’s belly with stretchy string and tie on the pouch!Make-it-Monday_Kangaroopouch
